From the 1940s to present day
This intensive one-day course, developed in collaboration with Lorraine Glynn and the Hair Guild of Ireland at Blow Academy, is tailored for hairstyling professionals with a minimum of one year of experience. Participants will explore looks from the 1940's - current day hairstyling, blending historical knowledge, practical skills, and innovative techniques. You'll discover how to adapt vintage looks and updos for modern hair.
Under the guidance of Lorraine Glynn, a highly regarded and award-winning Hair and Make-Up Artist, attendees will benefit from her extensive experience. Beginning her career in the 1970s, Lorraine has worked in prestigious salons in Dublin and London and has become a prominent figure in the film industry, lending her expertise to numerous high-profile productions.

Introduction to Period Hairstyling Course to create from 1940’s – present day
Overview of the role of hairstyling in fashion and society of this period
Planning and Selecting a Period Hairstyle
Assessing natural hair vs. styling goals
Using inspiration boards and reference photos
Adapting period looks and up styles to modern hair styles
Setting and Preparation Techniques
Wet setting, pin curls, rollers
Dressing Out and Finishing Techniques
Brushing out curls/waves
Sculpting volume and silhouette
Securing hair invisibly and for durability
Hands-On
Students choose a decade and plan a style
Create a look from prep to finish

All necessary equipment will be supplied throughout the course. Participants may choose to bring their own tools or equipment if they prefer.
Models will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own as well.
Students will be asked during the booking process to specify which decade they intend to focus on for their hands-on practical experience.

Lorraine Glynn
Lorraine Glynn is an IFTA (Irish Film & Television Academy) and BAFTA-winning hair designer.
Glynn began her apprenticeship in the late 70s, working in top salons in Dublin and London.
Moving to train in the film industry in the mid-90s.
Recent completed films and TV series.
'Small Things Like These' with Cillian Murphy. 'The Great'. Seasons 1,2 & 3 and 'Maleficent 2'. Personal hair designer to "Elle Fanning' and 'Marlowe'.
Lorraine won her first IFTA in 2007 for her work (with makeup artist Lynn Johnston) on transforming Cillian Murphy’s character into drag queen Kitten in ‘Breakfast on Pluto’.
Since then, she has won three more IFTA’s (2010’s ‘The Take’, 2012’s ‘Albert Nobbs’ and 2014’s ‘Byzantium’) and a BAFTA TV Award for her work on ‘My Boy Jack’, the true story of author Rudyard Kipling.
She has also worked on Sofia Coppola’s high-budget period piece ‘Marie Antoinette’, ‘Tristan and Isolde’ and the fantasy epic mini-series ‘Neverland’.
Lorraine was the hair designer on Oscar-nominated ‘Brooklyn’, ‘The Secret Scripture’ and ‘The Professor and the Madman’.

To secure your place at Blow Academy, a deposit is required. Please note that deposits are non-refundable. The full course fee must be paid no later than two weeks before the course start date. Once paid, course fees are non-refundable. However, if you are unable to attend, a credit note will be issued, allowing you to reschedule your booking for a future date.
If Blow Academy cancels your course, you will be offered the choice of a full refund or the option to reschedule for another available date.

Lorraine Glynn is a distinguished and award-winning Hair and Make-Up Artist who began her career in the 1970s, working in top salons in Dublin and London. Her exceptional talent has earned her numerous accolades, including multiple BAFTA awards. Lorraine received a BAFTA for her work on My Boy Jack and was also nominated for her contributions to the critically acclaimed series The Great. In addition, she has been honoured with a Hair and Make-up Guild Award for Brooklyn and has secured four Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Awards, underscoring her significant impact on both national and international cinema.
